Nevada Approves Regulations for Self-Driving Cars

I’m pretty far from a Luddite, but I’m not sure if these will be more or less dangerous to a cyclist.  On the one hand, object detection is really hard for a computer, even with camera and radar.  Recognizing a pedestrian crossing the street in front of the car would be pretty easy, but how does it pick out a person standing in between two parked cars waiting to cross the street?  Can the computer recognize a hand signal from a cyclist and understand that it shouldn’t overtake the cyclist because he/she is going to turn left?  On the other hand, the computer isn’t texting, eating, putting on makeup, or yelling at the kids in the back seat.  What do you think?

  1. Good questions. My guess is it will be better than a bad driver and worse than a good one! The list of “car manufacturers, insurance companies, law enforcement officials and others” doesn’t have a particularly good record with respect to peds and cyclists.
